About David Reid
Swinging Lanterns, ink on Xuan paper, 70x140cm
David Reid is a Shanghai based Australian artist with a long interest in Chinese culture, especially in Chinese ink painting.
His exhibition at the China Design Centre displays his new works on Xuan paper which is a type of traditional Chinese paper made of rice, mulberry and cotton.
He employs some of the major ideas and the materials of Chinese art but never seeks to imitate. Through spontaneity, layering of colours and aesthetic simplicity, David takes the traditional art form and gives it a contemporary edge.
Since participating in the Shanghai Art Fairs of 2005, 2006 and 2007, David has exhibited widely in China. Highlights include a solo exhibition at the Wuxi Museum in 2015, which was part of the 40th Anniversary of Australia-China Diplomatic Relations. David also exhibits in Australia, Germany and Switzerland.
David has completed a very large ink painting ( 7.2 x 2.7m ) on silk for the US Fund Manager Black Rock earlier this year.
The Dewy Path, ink on silk (12 panels)
This will be his first exhibition in London.
